Export readable messages

Save transcripts on a device that can open your chats.

Before exporting

Use a device that can open the message history you want to export. Deleted history, history hidden by a reset and encrypted messages without available keys cannot be recovered by exporting.

Readable transcripts are created on your device. Keep the exported files private.

Create the export

  1. Open Settings → Export & delete account.
  2. Find Export readable messages, choose its verification action and verify your identity.
  3. Choose Choose file and export messages and follow the device’s save prompts.
  4. Save every output part. If the browser saves separate parts, check the completion record in the final ZIP.

What the files contain

Exporting does not mark unread messages as read. This is separate from the main personal-data ZIP, where stored encrypted message content remains encrypted.

  • JSON and HTML transcripts of accessible sent and received messages.
  • Authors, timestamps, replies and attachment metadata.
  • No downloaded or decrypted photos or videos.
  • No recovery of messages whose history or keys are unavailable.
